SEC’s Cox Says Sarbanes-Oxley Tricky in Practice

by Rick Turoczy on May 14, 2006

Top securities and accounting regulators said at a conference Wednesday they are open to suggestions about how to change the controversial corporate governance law that requires companies to prove they have systems in place to prevent accounting mistakes.

Speaking at the beginning of an all-day conference about the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, Cox said the agency has every intention of getting the law right “sooner rather than later.”

Cox made it clear Wednesday he’s open to changing the rules. Sarbanes-Oxley, he said, has “great potential” to improve financial reporting. But he added that, “in practice, it hasn’t always worked out that way.”
